Now you have chosen, at least tentatively, what details you want to present inside your essay, you’re set to write the thesis statement.
Your thesis statement informs the reader what the essay is going to be about, and what point you, the writer, is going to be making. You understand what the essay is going to be about. That was your topic. Now you must examine your outline or diagram and determine what point you’ll be making. What do the primary ideas and supporting ideas that you listed say about your topic?
How do I get a thesis?
A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts such as surprising contrasts or similarities, and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis,” a basic or main idea, an argument that you think you can support with evidence but that may need adjustment along the way.
Your thesis statement will have two parts.
The first part states the topic.
Caribbean’s Culture
Building a House
Public Transportation
The second part states the point of the essay.
Or in the second part you could simply list the three main ideas you will discuss.
Once you have formulated a thesis statement that fits this pattern and with which you are comfortable, you are ready to continue.
