Creamy white discharge and pregnancy
Many women discover that vaginal discharge increases once they’re pregnant- it is very natural and occurs for a couple of reasons. While pregnant the cervix(neck of the womb) and vaginal walls get softer and discharge increases to help you stop any kind of infections travelling up from the vagina towards the womb.
Near the end of pregnancy, the baby’s head pressing on the cervix may cause discharge. This can often be rather heavy, and could feel as though you have by mistake passed urine.
Within the last week of pregnancy, your discharge usually contains streaks of thick mucus as well as having blood. This is known as a ‘show’ and happens when the cervical plug(a ‘ball’ of thick mucus that fills the cervix during pregnancy) comes away. It is just a sign that the body is beginning to prepare for birth, and you will have some small ‘shows’ within the days till you enter labour.
Increased discharge is really a standard part of pregnancy, but it is important to keep an eye on it and tell a family doctor or midwife if you think it smells or appears strange, or you have pain, itching or soreness inside the vaginal area. Its possible you have an infection such as thrush, which can be quickly treated.
