What is salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is a natural product which has been used in the treatment of disease for thousands of years. In addition to being produced naturally from plants, salicylic acid can also be synthesized through a chemical reaction, which is the production method of choice for commercial use.

It has been used to ease minor aches and fevers since ancient times in Greece and Rome, and today, it also serves that function as a component in aspirin. Given its ability to increase the shedding of skin cells, salicylic acid is used in a variety of skin and hair care products like facial scrubs and shampoo.

Salicylic acid helps open pores, shed dead skin cells and neutralizes bacteria. As a result of this exfoliating effect, new skin cells are allowed to grow back unhindered. Salicylic acid also unclogs pores and controls non-inflammatory skin lesions with regular use. It reduces blackheads and whiteheads, and is most effective when applied before bedtime and rinsed off in the morning.
