Jaundice Symptom

The most recognizable symptom of jaundice is a yellow, orange, or greenish discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes, mucous membranes, and bodily fluids caused by the accumulation of bile pigment. Other symptoms of jaundice include pale brown feces and itching. The itching, or pruritis, can sometimes become quite severe and cause the patient to scratch until sores appear.

A less serious side effect that may occur from jaundice is sleepiness in the newborn. This can cause the baby to not eat well, which can make the jaundice worsen. Apart from the yellowing, when the jaundice progress beyond the mild episode, these infants can show signs of poor feeding such as by refusing to suck, excessive irritability or lethargy and poor urine output. They can become increasingly sleepy and unusually drowsy as the disease progresses.
