What is Gout

Gout is a sub-type of arthritis also known as gouty arthritis and is characterized by severe inflammation and pain of the affected joint. It can affect a single or multiple joints at one time and is a very agonizing disorder. There are various symptoms when gout occurs. Inflammation of the affected joints, pain and redness of the area where the gout is, stiffness in the affected joint and swelling around it is also possible. Other symptoms of gout can be found throughout the body, and this may include pain and swelling in other areas.

Touching or moving the affected area can be extremely painful. Such an attack usually subsides on its own within 5-7 days and may reoccur after a few weeks, months or even years. Gout usually attacks the feet, ankles, hands, wrists and knees.
